Lord's Day Liturgy—5/26/24

WELCOME

We are so glad you are here

WHERE THE WEARY FIND REST IN THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS CHRIST

May 26TH, 2024

Recognizing the Gospel as the foundation of our new life in Christ, we structure our service to be a proclamation of this Gospel. Our worship is grouped into the following sections that bring us to the Gospel: Call to Worship, Law, Gospel, Table and Benediction

CALL TO WORSHIP

We start with a proclamation of God:

His character, His perfections and His actions

¶Please stand If you are able

Congregation: “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

♪Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

♪All Glory Be to Christ

Should nothing of our efforts stand, No legacy survive

Unless the Lord does raise the house, In vain its builders strive

To you who boast tomorrow's gain, Tell me what is your life

A mist that vanishes at dawn, All glory be to Christ!

CHORUS:

All glory be to Christ our king! All glory be to Christ! D ABmGD

His rule and reign we’ll ever sing, All glory be to Christ!

His will be done, His kingdom come, On earth as is above

Who is Himself our daily bread, Praise Him the Lord of love

Let living water satisfy, The thirsty without price

We'll take a cup of kindness yet, All glory be to Christ!

When on the day the great I Am, The faithful and the true

The Lamb who was for sinners slain, Is making all things new

Behold our God shall live with us, And be our steadfast light

And we shall ere his people be, All glory be to Christ!

The Law

In light of the character of God, we recognize our sin, our unworthiness, and our desperate need.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.”—Exodus 20:8-11

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: Thanks be to God

Heidelberg Catechism Q. 103

Minister: “What is required in the fourth Commandment?”

Congregation: “In the first place, God wills that the ministry of the Gospel and schools be maintained, and that I, especially on the day of rest, diligently attend church, to learn the Word of God, to use the Holy Sacraments, to call publicly upon the Lord, and to give Christian alms. In the second place, that all the days of my life I rest from my evil works, allow the Lord to work in me by His Spirit, and thus begin in this life the everlasting Sabbath.

Confession of Sin

Minister: “Let’s bear one another’s burdens as we draw near to the throne of Grace and confess our sins.”

Congregation: “Almighty Father, in light of our salvation in Christ, we ask you to have mercy on us and forgive our sins. Renew us through your Spirit and lead us to put sin to death and live holy lives. Amen.

The Gospel

By Grace, God has not left us in our need. He has revealed himself to us and provided forgiveness of our sins, reconciliation to himself and new life.

17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”—Hebrews 6:17-20

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God

Minister: “Do you believe this good news? That God has sworn an oath to be your refuge in Christ—our all-sufficient Savior, our Great High Priest, and our eternally, infallible hope?

Congregation: “We believe.

♪All Sufficient Merit

All sufficient merit shining like the sun

A fortune I inherit by no work I have done

My righteousness I forfeit at my Savior's cross

Where all sufficient merit did what I could not

In love He condescended eternal now in time

A life without a blemish the Maker made to die

The law could never save us our lawlessness had won

Until the pure and spotless Lamb had finally come

CHORUS:

It is done it is finished

No more dеbt I owe

Paid in full all sufficient

Merit now my own

I lay down my garmеnts any empty boast

Good works now all corrupted by the sinful host

I'm dressed in my Lord Jesus a crimson Robe made white

No more fear of judgment His righteousness is mine

All sufficient merit firm in life and death

The joy of my salvation shall be my final breath

When I stand accepted before the throne of God

I'll gaze upon my Jesus and thank Him for the cross

Yes, I'll thank You for the cross

 ♪Jesus Strong and Kind

Jesus said

That if I thirst

I should come to him

No one else can satisfy

I should come to him

Jesus said

If I am weak

I should come to him

No one else can be my strength

I should come to him

CHORUS:

For the Lord is good and faithful

He will keep us day and night

We can always run to Jesus

Jesus, strong and kind

Jesus said

That if I fear

I should come to him

No one else can be my shield

I should come to him

Jesus said if I am lost

He will come to me

And he showed me on that cross

He will come to me

Confessing the Faith

¶Be seated

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

-Apostles Creed

Reading of the passage

13 For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it; 14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions. 15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus.

18 Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.) 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea which were in Christ; 23 but only, they kept hearing, “He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith which he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they were glorifying God because of me.”—Galatians 1:13-24

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: Thanks be to God

From Dead Works to Christ

Galatians 1:13-24

The Table

We come to the table to see the gospel made tangible

♪ Communion Hymn

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away

Slain for us, and we remember

The promise made that all who come in faith

Find forgiveness at the cross

So we share in this bread of life

And we drink of His sacrifice

As a sign of our bonds of peace

Around the table of the King

The body of our Savior Jesus Christ

Torn for you, eat and remember

The wounds that heal the death that brings us life

Paid the price to make us one

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin

Shed for you, drink and remember

He drained death’s cup that all may enter in

To receive the life of God

So we share in this bread of life

And we drink of His sacrifice

As a sign of our bonds of peace

Around the table of the King

And so with thankfulness and faith

We rise to respond, and to remember

Our call to follow in the steps of Christ

As His body here on earth

As we share in His suffering

We proclaim, Christ will come again

And we’ll join in the feast of heaven

Around the table of the King

Around the table of the King

The Lord’s Prayer

Minister: “In light of all we’ve been so freely given, let's respond together with full hearts by praying as the Lord taught us”

Congregation:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Benediction

Our gratitude for what God has done for us urges us to go forth in obedience, proclaiming that same Gospel we received.

Minister: “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost. He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.”—Revelation 22:17

Congregation: “Amen. Come Lord Jesus.”—Revelation 22:20

Minister: “We have delivered to you as of first importance what we also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”—1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Congregation: “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond- servants to depart in peace, according to Your word; for our eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel."—Luke 2:29-32

Minister: "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you."—Romans 16:20
