Lord's Day Liturgy 5/19/24

WELCOME

We are so glad you are here

May 5TH, 2024

WHERE THE WEARY FIND REST IN THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS CHRIST

Recognizing the Gospel as the foundation of our new life in Christ, we structure our service to be a proclamation of this Gospel. Our worship is grouped into the following sections that bring us to the Gospel: Call to Worship, Law, Gospel, Table and Benediction

CALL TO WORSHIP

We start with a proclamation of God:

His character, His perfections and His actions

¶Please stand If you are able

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God

Minister: “...we lift our voices as one to praise Your name, saying...”

Congregation: “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

♪Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above ye heav’nly host

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

♪Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,

casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

cherubim and seraphim, falling down before Thee,

which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;

only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee,

perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea;

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

The Law

In light of the character of God, we recognize our sin, our unworthiness, and our desperate need.

¶Be seated

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”—Exodus 20:7

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: Thanks be to God

Heidelberg Catechism Q. 99

Minister: “What is required in the third Commandment?”

Congregation: “That we must not by cursing, or by false swearing, nor yet by unnecessary oaths, profane or abuse the name of God; nor even by our silence and connivance be partakers of these horrible sins in others; and in sum, that we use the Holy Name of God in no other way than with fear and reverence, so that He may be rightly confessed and worshipped by us, and be glorified in all our words and works.

Heidelberg Catechism Q. 100

Minister: “Is the profaning of God’s name, by swearing and cursing, so grievous a sin, that His wrath is kindled against those also who do not help as much as they can to hinder and forbid the same?"

Congregation: “Yes truly, for no sin is greater and more provoking to God than the profaning of His name; wherefore He even commanded it to be punished with death.

Confession of Sin

Minister: “Let’s bear one another’s burdens as we draw near to the throne of Grace and confess our sins.”

Congregation: “Almighty Father, in light of our salvation in Christ, we ask you to have mercy on us and forgive our sins. Renew us through your Spirit and lead us to put sin to death and live holy lives. Amen.

The Gospel

By Grace, God has not left us in our need. He has revealed himself to us and provided forgiveness of our sins, reconciliation to himself and new life.

21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.”—Colossians 1:21-23

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God

Minister: “Do you believe this good news? That Christ has taken us in the middle of our hostility against God, and has reconciled us with the Father through His death—so that in Him we are holy, and blameless, and beyond reproach?

Congregation: “We believe.

♪Jesus, Thank You

The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend

The agonies of Calvary

You the perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son

Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me

CHORUS:

Your blood has washed away my sin

Jesus, thank You

The Father’s wrath completely satisfied

Jesus, thank You

Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table

Jesus, thank You

By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near

Your enemy You’ve made Your friend

Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace

Your mercy and Your kindness know no end

BRIDGE:

Lover of my soul

I want to live for You (x2)

♪My Hope is Built on Nothing Less

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness

I dare not trust the sweetest frame

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name

CHORUS:

On Christ the solid Rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand

All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness hides His lovely face

I rest on His unchanging grace

In every high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil

His oath, His covenant, His blood

Support me in the whelming flood

When all around my soul gives way

He then is all my hope and stay

When He shall come with trumpet sound

Oh may I then in Him be found

Dressed in His righteousness alone

Faultless to stand before the throne

Confessing the Faith

¶Be seated

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

-Apostles Creed

Reading of the passage

6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.”—Galatians 1:6-12

Minister: “The word of the Lord”

Congregation: Thanks be to God

Galatians 1:6-12

The Table

We come to the table to see the gospel made tangible

♪ Communion Hymn

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away

Slain for us, and we remember

The promise made that all who come in faith

Find forgiveness at the cross

So we share in this bread of life

And we drink of His sacrifice

As a sign of our bonds of peace

Around the table of the King

The body of our Savior Jesus Christ

Torn for you, eat and remember

The wounds that heal the death that brings us life

Paid the price to make us one

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin

Shed for you, drink and remember

He drained death’s cup that all may enter in

To receive the life of God

So we share in this bread of life

And we drink of His sacrifice

As a sign of our bonds of peace

Around the table of the King

And so with thankfulness and faith

We rise to respond, and to remember

Our call to follow in the steps of Christ

As His body here on earth

As we share in His suffering

We proclaim, Christ will come again

And we’ll join in the feast of heaven

Around the table of the King

Around the table of the King

The Lord’s Prayer

Minister: “In light of all we’ve been so freely given, let's respond together with full hearts by praying as the Lord taught us”

Congregation:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Benediction

Our gratitude for what God has done for us urges us to go forth in obedience, proclaiming that same Gospel we received.

Minister: “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost. He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.”—Revelation 22:17

Congregation: “Amen. Come Lord Jesus.”—Revelation 22:20

Minister: “We have delivered to you as of first importance what we also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”—1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Congregation: “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond- servants to depart in peace, according to Your word; for our eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel."—Luke 2:29-32

Minister: "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."—Romans 15:13
